This lecture was not only my first lecture for introduction
to journalism, it was also my first ever lecture at university and as a result
I was especially excited as well as nervous, unsure as to whether journalism
would in fact be the right career path for me. My worries were however quickly
laid to rest during this first lecture and I was in fact inspired by the
opportunities which this career path can potentially provide people with.
Throughout the lecture many different perspectives and quotes on the career of
journalism were presented to us, some I agreed with, while others I certainly
did not. One quote which particularly resinated with me was one said by
American Publisher & Editor Henry R. Luce, reading:
“I became a journalist to become as close as possible to the heart of the world.”
This quote
effectively captures the essential reason behind why I want to explore a career
in Journalism. I want to live the events which in the future will plague our TV
screens, news papers and computers. I want to be apart of dramatic moments in
our world’s history. This leads me to one of the very first quotes we discussed
in our lecture, spoken by Phillip Graham, editor of the Washington post, reading:
“Journalism is the first rough draft of history.”
Reading this quote it quickly became
clear that journalism is the right career path for me as it is my ambition in
life to make a positive impact on our society and hopefully make a definitive
change to our world small or big and I feel as though I will be provided with
the opportunity to do this if I am able to live and breathe the events which
will in the future become a part of the worlds history.
